Frequently asked questions

How much is the overstay fine in Thailand?

500 THB for each day you overstay, up to a maximum of 20,000 THB. You pay it at the airport or border checkpoint when you leave.

Will I be banned from Thailand for overstaying?

If you surrender yourself when leaving, there is no ban for 90 days or less. Over 90 days means a 1-year ban, over 1 year a 3-year ban, over 3 years a 5-year ban, and over 5 years a 10-year ban, counted from the day you leave.

What if I am caught by police instead of leaving on my own?

If you are arrested for overstaying, you can be detained and deported, and the ban is 5 years for an overstay of up to 1 year, or 10 years if longer. The fine and costs in that case are decided by the authorities.

Is the day I leave counted as an overstay day?

Yes. Your permitted stay ends on the date in your passport stamp. Each day after that, including the day you depart, counts as one day of overstay.

Can I fix a short overstay by extending my visa?

Sometimes. Immigration offices may accept an extension application with the overstay fine paid, but it is at their discretion. Contact your local immigration office as early as possible.
